Canva's magic design is an AI wrapper

There are now hundreds of tools that call themselves AI design tools. New ones show up every month. Each one promises to generate designs from a prompt. Each one puts AI design or AI-powered design in the headline.

And most of them are lying. Not maliciously. But structurally.

What they actually do is call someone else's AI and hand you the result. The design part? That's still a template. Or worse, a flat image with no structure at all.

Let me explain what I mean.



The architecture behind most AI design tools

Open any of these tools. Type a prompt. Watch what happens. Behind the scenes, it's doing one of two things.


Method 1: Template stuffing

This is how template-tools like Canva, Designs AI, Adcreative AI, or Predis work.

  1. The tool picks a template. A pre-built layout with placeholder slots for a headline, body text, an image, maybe a CTA button. The template decides where everything goes, how much space it gets, what the visual hierarchy looks like. This is the starting point. Not your campaign idea. Not your brief. A template.

  2. Your prompt goes to an LLM API, usually OpenAI's GPT or something similar. The LLM generates copy to fill the template's text slots. A headline that fits the headline box. Body text that fits the body box. A call-to-action for the CTA slot. The text is shaped to match the template, not the other way around.

  3. The same prompt, or a derived version of it, goes to an image generation API like Nano Banana. It produces a flat image, a JPEG or PNG with all the pixels baked together, and that gets dropped into the template's image slot.

  4. The tool assembles the final output. Text in the text boxes. Image in the image slot. Maybe it applies a color scheme. Maybe it adjusts a font. But the layout? Unchanged. It's the same template it started with.

The process starts with a template and ends with a template. Your campaign brief, your brand, your specific need, none of that shaped the layout. The LLM didn't design anything. The image model didn't design anything. The template was already there before you typed a single word.


Method 2: Image generation as design

This is even simpler. The tool takes your prompt, sends it to an image generation model like Nano Banana, DALL-E, Midjourney, or Flux, and displays the generated image as if it were a design.

There's no template here. But there's no design either. What you get back is a flat image. Every element, the headline, the background, the product, the CTA, is fused into a single layer of pixels. You can't click the headline and edit it. You can't move the logo. You can't change the font size. You can't swap the product image without regenerating the whole thing. Recent benchmarks testing 26 image generators on commercial design tasks confirm this: they consistently fail at layout precision, text accuracy, and structural hierarchy.

It looks like a design. It's a picture of a design.


Both methods, same problem

Neither method generates a design. The first fills a pre-made layout with AI-generated content. The second generates a flat image and calls it done. In both cases, the tool is an orchestration layer, calling APIs and presenting the output. The layout is never composed. The structure is never generated. It's integration, not generation.


Canva: both methods in one product

Canva is the clearest example of this because they do both.

Their core product is Method 1. You pick a template, swap the text, drop in your image, adjust the colors. They've added AI features on top, like generating copy and suggesting layouts, but the starting point is always a template from their library. The layout was designed by a human designer at Canva, not generated for your specific brief.

Then they acquired Leonardo AI, an image generation model. Leonardo generates images. But images aren't designs. When Canva uses Leonardo to generate a visual for your project, what you get is a flat image dropped into a template slot, or a standalone flat image you can't structurally edit. The headline is pixels. The background is pixels. The CTA is pixels. It's all one fused layer.

Canva calls this AI design. But Leonardo is an image model, not an AI design generator. It doesn't compose layouts. It doesn't understand typographic hierarchy or brand component systems. It predicts pixels. Canva's templates handle the structure, and Leonardo fills the image slot. That's Method 1 and Method 2 stitched together in the same product, and neither one generates a design, but, called magic design.



Why this matters more than it sounds

You might think: Who cares how it works? If the output looks good, what's the difference?

Fair question. Here's the difference.

You can't edit the image. The background, the product photo, the decorative elements are all fused into one flat layer. Want to move the product image two inches to the left? You can't. Want to remove the background pattern? Regenerate and hope. Want to change just the headline font? Not possible if the text is baked into pixels.

The layout isn't yours. It's a template. The same template available to every other user. Your skincare brand, a SaaS startup in Berlin, and a restaurant chain in Dubai could all end up with the same composition. Different words, different images, same bones.

Brand control is cosmetic. Most of these tools let you set brand colors and upload a logo. But the template wasn't designed for your brand. Your colors get applied as an overlay. Your logo gets dropped into a corner. Your brand components, the badges, stickers, frames, product cards, and visual elements that make your brand recognizable, don't exist in the system at all. The design's structure, the hierarchy, the spacing, the composition, has nothing to do with your brand guidelines.

Resizing breaks everything. Ask for a story version of your square post. The tool either crops and stretches, or it dumps your content into a different template for that size. Either way, you're starting over on the layout. Because the layout was never generated. It was selected from a fixed set.

It doesn't scale the way you'd expect. Need 50 product banners? The tool might batch-generate them, but each one uses the same template with swapped content. You don't get 50 unique compositions. You get one composition repeated 50 times with different text and images plugged in.

It is the text message and images that are AI generated using APIs, not the designs and templates.



AI powered design tools vs. AI-generated design

This is the distinction that most of the market is glossing over.

AI powered means the tool uses AI somewhere in its pipeline. The copy is AI-generated. The image is AI-generated. The color suggestion might be AI-driven. But the design, meaning the layout, the composition, the spatial relationships between elements, the typographic hierarchy, is not generated by AI. It's pre-made.

AI-generated design means the design itself is the AI output. The layout is composed from scratch. The system decides where the headline goes, how much whitespace surrounds it, where the image sits relative to the CTA, how the components are used, how the visual flow guides the viewer's eye. That composition is generated, not retrieved from a template library.

It's the difference between Mad Libs and writing. Mad Libs gives you a fixed structure with blanks to fill in. You supply the nouns and adjectives, but the sentence structure was decided before you showed up. You can't add a paragraph, change the punchline, or make it longer. The blanks are all you get.

Most AI powered design tools are playing Mad Libs. The AI fills in the blanks with new words and new images, but the structure was decided before you typed your prompt. Add an extra element? The blanks don't allow it. Need a more complex layout? There's no blank for that. Even a longer headline can break the structure because the blank was sized for a shorter one.



How to spot an API wrapper among AI graphic design tools

If you're evaluating AI graphic design tools right now, here's what to look for:

Check the output file. Is it a flat image like a JPEG or PNG, or is it a layered design where you can click individual elements? If you can't select the headline independently from the background, the tool didn't generate a design. It generated an image.

Try resizing. Take a square post and request it as a landscape banner. Does the tool compose a new layout that works for that canvas? Or does it stretch, crop, or dump you into a different template? Real generative design re-composes for every size.

Change the brand. Set up two completely different brand kits. Generate the same brief with each. Do you get structurally different designs that reflect each brand's DNA? Or do you get the same layout with different colors pasted on top?

Look at the variation. Generate the same prompt five times. Are the layouts genuinely different in structure, with different compositions and different visual hierarchies? Or are they the same template with minor shuffles?

Test with a long headline. Type a headline that's twice as long as usual. Does the design re-compose to accommodate it? Or does it overflow, truncate, or break? Template-based systems break on these cases because the template was designed for an assumed content length.

These aren't trick questions. They're the five basics of what generative design should mean: editable layers, real resizing, brand-aware variation, structural diversity, and long-headline handling. Most wrappers fail all five.



What actual generative design looks like

Brand rules are structural, not decorative. Your brand kit isn't a color palette in a sidebar. It's baked into how the model composes. Your fonts determine typographic hierarchy. Your component styles influence layout architecture. A new team member can't drift off-brand because the model doesn't allow drift.

Resizing means re-composing. A story version of your post isn't a cropped version. It's a new layout, same content, same brand, different composition that actually works for that canvas.

Language changes trigger layout changes too. An Arabic version doesn't just swap the text direction. It re-composes the hierarchy because Arabic typographic conventions are structurally different from English. A German version accounts for longer headlines without breaking the layout.

That's what it means for the design itself to be AI-generated. The model understands composition, not just content.



Why this gap exists

Building an API wrapper is fast. Gemini has an API. Nano Banana has an API. You can stitch them together with a template engine and a nice frontend in a few days or weeks. Call it an AI design tool. Launch it. The market is hot and the label sells.

Building a design model is a fundamentally different problem. You're not generating pixels or text. You're generating structure. Spatial relationships. Hierarchies. The model needs to understand that a CTA button should have visual weight, that a headline needs breathing room, that a product image should anchor the composition, that brand rules constrain the solution space. That's years of work, not days, weeks, or months.

So the market fills up with API wrappers because they're faster to build and easier to fund. And they all claim the same thing: AI design. The label is identical. The technology underneath is not.



The question to ask before choosing the best AI design tools

Next time you evaluate an AI design tool, ask one question:

What, exactly, is the AI designing?

If the answer is, the text and the image, you're looking at an API wrapper. The AI is generating ingredients. A template is doing the design.

If the answer is, the composition, the layout, the hierarchy, the spatial relationships, the brand-compliant structure, you're looking at a design model.
